Our products are hand-made in the USA from recycled lobstering rope, predominantly polypropylene, used in DownEast Maine fishing villages. Since it is made for being submerged in the ocean, this rope is highly resistant to mold and mildew, does not absorb water, and does not rot. It is highly durable and with a bit of care will last a VERY long time. We have personal relationships with the fishermen from whom we get our rope, so we collect rope directly at the source with no middle men involved. It becomes a community effort to recycle an otherwise unused item and provide jobs for people in our towns.
Fishermen must replace their rope about every other year to protect their investment (i.e. lobster traps), so there are literally tons of this rope that needs to be recycled. Otherwise, the rope might be dumped in the ocean, buried or burned. Every year, there is a "new" set of retired rope that needs to be recycled, so we at The Fisherman's Family do everything we can to make useful products out of it.
Jonesport, like many coastal fishing villages in DownEast Maine, has many people who work "seasonal" jobs during the year instead of full-time, year-round jobs. Some examples are digging clams or saltwater worms in Spring and Fall, raking blueberries or lobster fishing in the Summer, and making Christmas wreaths in early Winter. We employ local people, some of whom might not otherwise have a seasonal job that covers the later Winter months into Spring. These are hard-working, salt-of-the earth types of people who proudly embrace the chance to earn seasonal income from locally available and regionally unique resources.
The Fisherman's Family employs people to work from their homes to reduce our overhead and make working convenient for our artisans. This also allows us to pay a decent wage for the work involved. Every item is unique since the hand-making process will produce individual differences in each product even though we may make hundreds per year. Every item is covered by a 30-day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied for any reason as well as a one-year warranty against faulty workmanship to show how firmly we believe in the quality of our products. We think this makes our company fall into a small percentage of employers who look to provide the best solutions for the individual worker, the community in general, the environment, and the customer.
